ABOUT CIBA
Inc.

Our mission
is to provide the highest quality, individualized intervention for children
with autism utilizing a method known as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). To
do so, we combine Discrete Trials, Incidental Learning, Direct Instruction,
and a Precision Teaching approaches to working with children. Programs are highly
individualized and the proportion of either of the different approaches is
dependent on each child and his or her needs. Typically we work in the child's
home, though we also work at the school setting as a school shadow (1:1 aide).
We provide both therapists and supervisors to implement the program when working
in-home. At home, the child is taught in a one-to-one situation for 3-7 hours
per day, 5 days per week.

There are
several characteristics that make Applied Behavior Analysis highly distinct from
other approaches to intervention with children. First, we utilize a "functional assessment
methodology
." Inappropriate behaviors are analyzed in terms of the functions
they serve. That is, what benefit does the child receive from having engaged
in that particular behavior. CIBA therapists are extensively trained in functional
analysis and in all other areas of Applied Behavior Analysis and utilize this
type of approach when working with children with autism. Furthermore, ABA
uses a "positive
replacement behavior
" approach. At CIBA, we feel that you cannot simply
make behavior go away. But rather, that you must replace it with a more appropriate
behavior that serves the same function as the inappropriate behavior. Lastly,
one of the most important aspects of program development for children with
Autism is "generalization." Generalization also
happens to be one of the other defining characteristics of ABA. Our organization
strongly believes in the need to program for generalization of new skills
while they are being learned.
